"Urban" Gardening

A couple months ago I read an interesting article in our newspaper about Victory Gardens and how we should all do our part and grow one. I got a little excited about planting my own victory garden but ran into one slight problem, I live in an apartment. I readjusted my "victory garden" to an Urban Garden.

As I was pricing the containers, the soil, the seeds, etc. at Home Depot and Walmart, I realized the harsh reality that it is expensive! That's when I made the goal of my Urban Garden being $20.

Since January I have been collecting certain recyclables that could be used as planters. I cut milk jugs in half, saved the apple packaging from Costco and hoarded some tin cans. I also drilled the lid of a milk jug to make my own watering jug.I went to Walmart and stocked up on soil and seeds and spent only $8. I learned a lesson about buying the cheapest soil, don't. It sucks up water like crazy and never seems to be moist. Good thing I still have $12 for left for the better stuff.

Last week, my Little came over and helped me plant my Urban Garden. On my kitchen table we mixed the soil with water and planted parsley and cilantro (for the bunnies) and a gajillion flowers. We ran out of soil half way through, so the reserved seeds will be staggered so I can enjoy flowers all summer long and the bunnies can get more than just one bunch of parsley at once.
They've already sprouted! Boy am I excited.
The parsley and cilantro take longer than the flowers, so I am waiting patiently for those to sprout. Also, the weather has been crazy here, so I've kept all my gardening in our bedroom (dogproof during the day), how's that for Urban?
