A Nice Dinner In

Last night we put the full china set to good use. We even made gravy for the gravy boat! Our last attempt to homemade mashed potatoes ended up with Jake dumping half our pepper shaker into them, making them spicy and almost inedible. This time, I manned the potatoes while he cut the steak, away from the pepper shaker. They were actually creamy, but a little lacking in the flavor department. I used milk, chicken broth and butter, but they got lost beneath the gravy. Jake claims sour cream doesn't belong in mashed potatoes, but I know it makes all the difference. Any tricks of the trade I'm unaware of? Nonetheless, I love getting out the fancy stuff, even if it is just the two of us. It's a nice date right here in the comfort of our home.

The tapered candles look very pretty. I should get myself some of those.

Funny you should mention them, they were quite traumatizing. The candlesticks themselves were from my Mom's craft box (unfinished wood) and were, well pieces of crap. So the tapered candles were wobbly, one candlestick holder was crooked, and every time we moved the tablecloth we were getting close to burning the joint down. And not to mention how hot they made the dinner table! They were taken down 10 minutes into dinner, but yes they really set the scene.
