In response to the post about cleaning up our couch, I got a lovely email from my Dad. This is what he had to say:
“People make more work for themselves by not putting things away in the first place. It only takes a few seconds to walk in to your apartment walk to the appropriate area, ie: closet, bookshelf or wherever and put what you have in hand away. You make twice as much work for yourself by throwing it on the couch. Now at a latter time you have to sort through the crap on the couch and put it where it should be. You have now done the same thing twice.”
Well, Dad you are totally right. I’ve always known this to be the truth, but for whatever reason have never done it. This is the perfect case in point
Our bookshelf that doubles as our entertainment center.
It houses all of our dvds, a few pictures and books. We have a problem with not putting DVDs back in their cases. Why? It’s not like it takes any time or effort, but for some reason I just want to chuck the DVD by the wayside to get the next one in.
It took me 8 minutes to put the DVDs back in their cases, straighten the books and dust the sucker. In that case, if we put the DVDs and books back where they belong, it’ll take me 2 minutes to dust the thing, instead of the 8 it took.
My Dad also added this little post note to his email:
Your mother and I, yelled, cajoled and threatened you for the first 18 years of your life to pick up after yourself, to no avail. All it took was some Schmuck talking on Oprah for 15 minutes for you to finally figure this out.
Love you Dad! : )
