A Birthday Celebration

This weekend we finally came out of the hermit shell we've been hiding in. During the week we are trying to survive so when the weekends roll around we like to hunker down and spend as much time as a family as possible. Due to this current lifestyle we haven't seen anyone since the spending a week with the in-laws during the daycare crisis. This weekend we came charging out of the gate, ready to get out there and enjoy our family and friends.

We have monthly family get togethers for my husband's large family and for the past few years they've happened at his parent's house down in Gardnerville. Nowadays most of the kids are going to college at the University and living up in Reno, so the parties have migrated to our house. This month's get together, in celebration of Jake's Grandma's birthday, was one of them.

Typically we bbq some hot dogs and hamburgers and gorge ourselves on chips and dip beforehand. This time the in-laws came up with a brilliant plan, they brought catering from Mimi's Cafe. And can we all say amazing development? It was delicious, easy for everyone and from what I gathered, relatively inexpensive.

Anyways, I decorated the house up for this party, using some cute party-ware I've had stashed accentuated with pink crepe paper that I swear has been breeding in my craft closet since my baby shower.

Remember last week when I was all "everyone sends up packages"  In true awesome fashion that is my family, my Grandma sent Gwen some cute outfits just the other week (thanks Grandma!). She picked her out this cute little party dress that Gwen got to wear for the party.

She took the bow on and off about 20 times before everyone came over. And after hours of cleaning our house which needed a little TLC, we sat down and waited for the troops to arrive.

And then, we partied. Here's where I shamefully admit that the only photos I have are of myself, Grandma and the baby. I hate being the awkward forceful person who's telling people to pose for the camera. Or I'm completely narcissistic or a blogger. Aren't those practicaly interchangeable? Yikes.

We ate, we chatted, we had ice cream pie from Baskin Robins. Let me stop here and say screw ice cream cakes. Go to Baskin Robins and get you some ice cream pies. They have hot fudge as iciing! No joke, and instead of crappy cake that's been frozen, there's pie crust. Oh man, it was glorious.

Cake was followed by presents, which included an ipad, because Grandma is one hip Prius-driving-Apple-loving lady. We watched You Tube videos on her ipad and then popped out back for a nice fire in our backyard where we roasted s'mores.

A couple notes on this:

1.) It's illegal to burn a fire pit in your backyard in Northern Nevada. Did you know that? It's true and with good reason. Embers were flying everywhere and well, people can't be trusted with such things as fire in their backyard in the middle of the dry arid desert.

I called the fire station and asked, so this is for reals folks. Your husband isn't just being paranoid and trying to ruin everyone's summer fun.

That being said, we totally still had a campfire and were as responsible as possible and were lucky enough to not have been the idiots who accidentally lit the neighborhood on fire.

2.) Don't buy the huge campfire marshmallows. They are too big, so your marshmallow doesn't roast all the way through. They totally sucked.

Did I mention my husband has a rather large family? With five kids, parents, girlfriends, boyfriends, etc. the parties consist of 12-13 people. Back when we lived in our apartment I never would've imagined we'd have the capabilities to host the family get togethers. And here we are, having everyone over for dinner and s'mores. While we're not going to host Thanksgiving or Christmas anytime soon, it's nice to know that we can have that many people over for fun and enjoyment and everyone has a seat.

Sometimes life's just awesome like that, surprising you with abundance. I like that.

How to Celebrate Mardi Gras With the Family

Mardi Gras is next Tuesday. We've never really celebrated it much around our house, but if you're interested in a great way to bring the holiday into your home and an excuse to celebrate, here's are a few ideas I found over at Snap! with great and simple ideas like these:

Family Friendly Mardi Gras Celebration Ideas:

[from Snap! via Paisley Petal Events)

Here are some ideas to help your family celebrate Mardi Gras this year:
1. Decorate masks.
2. Serve a traditional New Orleans style dinner.
3. Bake a king cake (or cupcakes).
4. Decorate the dinner table with Mardi Gras colors and symbols.
5. Listen to music typical of New Orleans such as zydeco, jazz & blues.

And also a quick little FAQ I found off the official New Orlean's Mardi Gras website:

No one will believe the tradition on Bourbon Street where women are offered beads to bare their breasts to the crowd. Could someone explain this? Where did this tradition come from?

Answer: As a fifth-generation New Orleanian, let me say this was never and is still not a tradition. Saying it is "tradition" is like saying that people who get drunk and pass out on Bourbon Street are following tradition as well.

Thankfully, this does not occur everywhere in New Orleans during Mardi Gras -- but just on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter area. An area known for its strip joints (where those interested in this sort of thing can see it year round). Let me explain why you may have heard this rumor. Within the last 10 or so years, a few spring-break age tourists visiting our city get drunk after the parades, go to Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, and lose their inhibitions. The others are onlookers. The end result is that certain types of individuals are now attracted to the French Quarter in the evenings after the parades.

Our beautiful balconies are noted for being a wonderful place to enjoy the history, atmosphere, and culture of the Quarter as the sounds of jazz drift by after a fantastic meal. During Mardi Gras, many think of them as a place to get away from the crowd surges below. (Bourbon Street balconies during Mardi Gras are now sold to news media, large corporations, or long-term customers up to 5 years in advance.)

Sadly, many bystanders caught in this crowd will never return to Mardi Gras ... because they don't realize they did not experience the "real" Mardi Gras. It does not occur in this area. The Mardi Gras locals grew up with, enjoyed, and love... is occurring everywhere else -- throughout the entire city of New Orleans and all of its surrounding suburbs!

Local Mardi Gras krewes who bring you the "Greatest Free Show on Earth" do not even parade through the Quarter. That is why you have never seen a parade filmed from a balcony in the Quarter -- you just see the crowds after the parades.

The result: If you're a woman, be warned. If you go into the French Quarter at night after a parade, many men are there just to see the sleazy stuff they saw on the news or the internet... and often assume every woman there wants to be part of the frenzy.

We look forward to the day people will again understand, appreciate, and experience the magic of Mardi Gras!

I couldn't help but laugh at that one.

A Ladybug Photobooth

At Gwyneth's first birthday party we setup a little "photobooth" with some red and white polka dot fabric and props. Dollar Tree is officially the best place to get props if you're ever in the market.

My mom cut out the mustaches from this template and we had chalkboard speech bubbles from Michaels. They were all glued onto wooden skewers.

There were a couple kinks in the setup (like trying to get an infant to cooperate with props). But all in all I think everyone enjoyed themselves with it.  Looking back at the photos are priceless.

A Ladybug First Birthday Party

[gallery link="file"]

What a party! Everything was covered in polka dots and black and red. Crepe paper was strewn about, polka dot balloons lined the yard, and Gwen was dressed to the nines with her ruby red slippers.  She made the obligatory mess of her ginormous cupcake and put on quite the show opening and playing with all of her presents.

A few days before the party I asked the husband to put a slideshow on our tv during the party. Little did we know our AppleTV had the coolest slideshow setting ever. We set a playlist from our itunes which was our background music for the party while the photos slowly went across our tv in picture frames. It would've been painstaking to sit and watch that as a slideshow of photos, but as a background for a party it was perfect and fun to look at pictures from the past year.

We also had a cute little photobooth setup in the kitchen where we found it quite difficult to pose with props and a one year old.

And here's a tutorial on the banner I made for behind her highchair.

Crepe Paper Banner Tutorial

When I was out shopping for ladybug party supplies for the upcoming party I came across polka dot crepe paper. POLKA DOT CREPE PAPER PEOPLE! The polka dot theme got a whole lot more serious after this discovery.  Thus, the crepe paper banner was made.

Cut your crepe paper into strips.

Fold the top two to four inches backwards, over the yarn.

Staple making sure the back of the staple is on the facing the back of your banner (the folded side).

Now hang that diddy up wherever you want to make a bold statement, like behind your daughter's high chair for her first birthday party.

*Post-edit See this banner in action here.*

Murder Mystery Party

Daddy & Daughter's Night In

Last night I went to my first "Mother's Night Out" with that MOMS club I mentioned earlier. It was a murder mystery party and Bachelorettes & Bullets was the theme. I've always thought a murder mystery party would be fun but when I got my part of Leslie Liplock, a blackmailing  model, I became quite nervous about the whole situation. I got even more anxious when I read about how the night works and saw I had to act things out.

But I went and met some nice ladies and had a great time, even though it was extremely uncomfortable and WEIRD. I'm not one for role play and I can't think on my toes, so naturally it was my worst nightmare awkward.

Eh, now I can die knowing that a murder mystery party won't be as cool as I thought it'd be. And I didn't have to do any of the work.  Not to mention that I realized I can squeeze into a dress I wore on a cruise almost 5 years ago. Woot!

Wreath Party

It's that time of year! Our now traditional wreath party.
The girl on the very left bought a beautiful new house and we got to go make our wreaths in it. Not only did she just officially get her keys, she hosted a party! We had a bit of a snow storm and her new house is kind of up in the hills. It was nice and snowy while we sat on the couch with the fire lit, reading Christmas stories (what? you don't do that with your friends?). My contribution, of course, cupcakes.
I do believe the crushed candy cane is my signature holiday look this year. I made some chocolate chocolate chip cookies and threw some peppermint extract in and crushed peppermint on top (that did not turn out well). I didn't put any peppermint extract in the cupcakes, but topped them with crushed candy canes to give it a holiday look. I've learned my lesson with peppermint extract. It's only good with melted chocolate chips on ritz crackers. Mmmm.
It was a great time and the snow is still falling.

A Hawaiian Bridal Shower

This Saturday was a girlfriend's Bridal Shower. She is getting married on May 23rd and I'd be lying if I said I'm not excited. The Bridal Shower was Hawaiian themed, since the couple will be honeymooning in Maui for a week or two. Her sister-in-law and mother took care of the food while we took care of the games. We played the toilet paper wedding dress game where I neglected to tell anyone it was timed so the winning team did in fact have a head start. Someone did however, so nicely let us know that there is no cheating at bridal shower games!Good times were had by all. The bride ultimately wanted money as a gift to go towards her new fancy camera, and guess what she got Saturday evening! I'm totally jealous just from her blog post of pics taken with it already.
Now, the wedding week with all the fun stuff we get to help with. It'll be such a great time, I can't wait!

2nd Annual Easter Beer Hunt

This Saturday hosted our 2nd Annual Easter Beer Hunt. You heard me right, Beer Hunt. Sir Sunderland's friend cooked up the idea last year, which took place in a public park. Not our best idea, as drinking in public, let alone a park, is illegal. This year we took a safer approach; a girlfriend's gorgeous backyard. She even put the trampoline up for us. It was awesome.

We all got together last weekend and spray painted/dyed about 100 beers for the hunt. Saturday morning we hid the beers throughout the yard, on the roof and anywhere that would hold a beer.

The rules:
  • You must have a can of beer in hand at all times.
  • You can not "find" another beer until you have drank the one you have.

We couldn't have asked for better weather. Seeing as two days prior we had a nice little snowstorm, the sun and 55 degree weather was amazing. We barbecued, jumped on the trampoline and drank a whole lot of "dyed" beer, which turns out is tastier than all those hard boiled eggs!

A Bachelorette Bash to Remember

What a great time we had! It was 4 of us girls and the bride and we had a blast. There was some of this (yes that is me on the very right. Note to self, short hair that can't be put in a ponytail makes for not-so-flattering hair do. Pack hats!) We got to see 3 different types of whales, a sea lion, and a mola mola fish. It was pretty neat. One of the whales came up with it's mouth open, then went back down. All of us groaned due to the smell of raw sewage in the air. We were then told what we were smelling was whale poop. Yum! That's something that wasn't in the brochure.

After our whale watching adventure we went to a brewery for a much anticipated dinner. After getting a taste of their great beer the girls bought 2 gallon jugs of it, You bet that was used for our "party by the campfire" later that evening. The Bride was given appropriate bachelorette gifts, opened by the campfire with her headlamp. This is her reading her romance novel. Since when did headlamps become the new flash light? Everyone at the campground had headlamps. I have to admit they were pretty convenient, except when someone wearing one looked directly at you. It gives a whole new meaning to "don't shine the light in someone's eyes."
The weekend came and went, with a trip to the beach, hot dogs with bacon and a ton of s'mores. One of the girls thought it'd be interesting to bring Reese's for the s'mores. This was ingenius and not to mention DELICIOUS. I would highly recommend it.

When it came time to pack up camp the rain came in (which we were ready for). We embraced ourselves for our 10 hour drive home, back to the snow. When I got home, 12 hours after we left that morning, Sir Sunderland and Sophie were on the couch reading and I was greeted with a sweet note. Now it is back to normal life again. All of my campfire smoke smelling/marshmallow clad clothes are in the washer, the bed is made, pets fed, and I am off to work. At least I have a lovely sun burned forehead to show from my awesome vacation.
