So Long Events Calendar

[caption id="attachment_4313" align="aligncenter" width="432" caption="Image from Unraveled Design Etsy Shop"][/caption]

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately. About life, this blog, my path in life, my goals, dreams, and the direction I want to go in.

I began with the idea of The Reno-Sparks Mom providing the service of a calendar of events. As I dove into making it the best mom-centric events calendar this city had to offer I came to the realization that it takes A.Lot. Of.Time. It could easily be a full-time job for which one should get paid, which is not the story here.

So the calendar of events will be no more around these parts.

Don't worry, it gives me more time to focus on the things I am passionate about. Sharing things I discover, writing about this crazy life, giving more attention to the other tabs up there and you know, showering.

5 Things to Do This Week

Now that we've gained an hour to our day and we're all rearing to go for Spring I find it quite sucky that the weather is going to be gloomy. Let's face it, Spring doesn't exactly start until the 20th so we'll just have to wait patiently for our spring weather. That being said, there's plenty of indoor things to do this week ranging from crafts, basketball games and fun stuff to do up at Galena Creek.

1. Bighorns vs. Dakota Wizards games on Friday & Saturday evening

Bighorns games are great, clean family entertainment for as little as $8.

2. Make- It-and-Take-It  Headband & A Pink & Amethyst Mix Necklace

Make a couple things at Micahel's for free. If you play your cards right it looks like you could camp out all day and make both. I'm imagining this is more geared for older children to adults, but they don't specify either.

3. Galena toddlers

Head up to Galena State Park for a fun morning filled with nature based crafts and activities.

4. Six Flags Opening Weekend

Road trip! Head out to Six Flags, wear green and get in for $20.12

5. Girl Scouts 100th Birthday Party

Head over to the Eldorado and have some cake while celebrating the Girl Scouts turning 100.

5 Things To Do This Week

1. Springs Lawn Basics Seminar at Moana Nursery

Surprisingly there is a lot going on in the second week of March. Who would've thought? My top pick for the week actually has nothing to do with children, nor can you bring them, but it's all about keeping your grass alive. This thrills me to no end, seeing as we are clueless homeowners with lots of grass, pets and no clue how to maintain it. Let's just say we need to go. Anyone care to babysit?

2. Hands/ON! Free Family Program at NV Museum of Art

Don't fret, there are plenty of other things to do that involve the children, like the Second Saturday event at the Nevada Museum of Art. Not only is admission free but they have an amazing hands on schedule of events that includes making stained glass, kaleidoscopes (man, I get really excited about those, they're so simple but so cool) and a film screening of My Fair Lady (IN THE MUSEUM).

3. Build a Mini Basketball Hoop at Lowe’s

The kids can build a sweet basketball hoop at Lowe's

4. Learn About Pets

Are your kids bugging you to get a pet? Bring them on by the Pet Event hosted by the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada Troop #497 and learn all about animal care, pet issues and how you can help the Humane Society.

And oh yea, get you some girl scout cookies this week. There is an awesome page on their website where you can enter your zip code and they will give you the nearest cookie booth and hours. Does it get any better than that?

5. Make a T-Shirt Tote Bag- Free at Michael's

And last but not least, make a bag from a tshirt at Michaels. Just buy a cheap t-shirt, they provide the rest.

And there you have it. 5 things to do this week. Can't wait to hear about your adventures!

Don't forget, this is just a sampling of our events calendar. Check it out for more things to do.

5 Things To Do This Week

Ok, first of all, is it Monday already? And second of all, is it the 27th already? Wowsa, where has February gone?  We've been in Las Vegas this week visiting with family, doing a ton of crafts that I can't wait to share with you and taking in the warm, sunny weather. Meanwhile in Reno life carries on. Between story times and a cheap, family-friendly Irish music concert there's certainly plenty to do this week.

This is only a sampling of all that our events calendar has to offer. A couple cool features of our calendar that might tickle your fancy:

  • updated weekly

  • spans out for events throughout the year, making it easier for you to plan

  • you can choose the format, since we all like things different. Not sure how to make this happen? Check out this quick little guide

1.  Come in from the Cold Series at Bartley Ranch- The Blarney Band

This week's totally cheap and awesome concert: The Blarney Band, a duo who plays traditional Irish music. Just in time to get into the St. Patrick's Day groove.

2. Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra at Discovery Museum.

Put those season passes to good use or get more bang for your $8 admission this Saturday at the Discovery Museum. Enjoy the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra as great background music while enjoying the Discovery Museum. Have a budding musician? They can talk with the members of the Orchestra after their concert.

3. Story Time at Sundance

Take the children to the charming Sundance Bookstore on the corner of California Ave. for a storytime that shares stories, rhymes, songs, and activities. For children ages 3-6 and free. A nice little walk around the charming California Avenue before or after would make it a charming outing.

4. Washoe County Library System- Story Times

Throughout the week the local libraries host a slew of awesome storytimes. Preschool, toddler, baby, princess, the children can even read to a gentle therapy dog! I invite you to take a look at all the different types of story times here and for the dates and times visit the Washoe County Library’s website.

What to do this Week

These are the type of weeks I enjoy, the quiet, standard week where you have to really search for things to do. Lucky for you we've done the searching already so you can keep it simple. Here are five things to do this week, that have been selected from our events calendar.

During the Week

Tuesday, February 21st

1. Craft Time at South Valleys Library

2. Free Movie Matinee: Dolphin Tale at Spanish Springs Library

3. Washoe County Library Storytimes:

Throughout the week the local libraries host a slew of awesome storytimes. Preschool, toddler, baby, princess, the children can even read to a gentle therapy dog! I invite you to take a look at all the different types of story times here and for the dates and times visit the Washoe County Library’s website.

The Weekend

Saturday, February 25th

4. Special Storytime Honoring Black History Month at Barnes & Noble

5. Bartley Ranch Concert-

A $3 (can we say cheap, quality family entertainment?) donation is asked to see Contraband, "a band composed primarily of Reno-based doctors and fellow musicians. They play many different styles of music, and have been described as both a rock and folk band."

This is only a sampling of all that our events calendar has to offer. A couple cool features of our calendar:

  • updated weekly

2. Teddy Bear Tea Party

The Academy of Classic Ballet and Twinkletoes Dance Boutique are hosting a teddy bear tea party with A TEDDY BEAR PARADE. I am fighting my every urge not to be ridiculous and take the 13 month old to this.

3. Reno Bighorns vs. Austin Torros

$8 can get you into a basketball game. Cheap fun for the whole family.

Thursday, Feb. 16th

4. Galena Toddlers

Trek out to Galena Creek Visitors Center for some "nature based activities, snacks, and some fun music playing."

Saturday, Feb. 18th

5. Child Safety Fair

Free entry for first 200 to Discovery Museum for Child Safety Fair. Get all that impt. child safety stuff like tooth imprinting (I've never heard about this but feel like it's probably something we should be doing?) & fingerprinting kits.

What to do this Weekend {Valentine's Edition}

This weekend is full of great (and cheap, I might add) things to do with the kids. I am personally a huge fan of Michael's Make-It-and-Take-It events where you purchase an item (don't forget those 40% off coupons) and they supply you with all the little gee-gaws and tools to decorate it.

If that's too girly for your little boys (which, by the way there are plenty of boys at Michael's if you're concerned) you can always go the Home Depot route.

A cute hint for the husbands out there. Take your children to this event to create a card for their Moms. Win major points. Moms, just click on an icon at the bottom of the event to share with your husband. An anonymous tip in his inbox wouldn't hurt anyone, would it?

We'd love to see your children's creations! Snap a couple photos and come and share them on our Facebook wall.

There are plenty more great events like this going on throughout the entire month. Visit our events tab to see more.

Well, whether we like it or not, Christmas is upon us this weekend (I personally think the Christmas season can't come soon enough).
